What is too much when it comes to kid and Halloween?
School board wrestle with competing options from parents on what’s appropriate.

Stefanie Sellers was outraged when her eight-year-old daughter, Cheyenne, recently brought home a letter from her Barrie, Ont., school notifying parents that students in grades 3 and up were prohibited from wearing costumes to class on the ghoulish holiday.
“It’s like they’re trying to take out Christmas. How is Halloween disrespectful?” asked the 24-year-old woman Wednesday. “Every culture celebrates Halloween. I don’t see how it’s not politically correct. It’s just about kids dressing up in costume and getting free candy.”
Instead, officials at Portage View Public School want students interested in celebrating Halloween on Monday to get into the spirit by donning black and orange colours. Sellers says the school’s principal, Peter McKenna, told her that the ban is based on a number of reasons, from the cost of costumes to the need to be more inclusive in the school. She says if this was the case, the ban should apply to all children in the school. Students in kindergarten to Grade 2 are encouraged to dress up in costume. Despite the ban, her daughter, who is in Grade 3 this year, will go to school as planned in a zombie cheerleader get-up.
“All they needed was one person to say, ‘This offends me’ and they get rid of it,” said Sellers. “Getting rid of it offends me and that’s why we have a problem.”
Halloween costume bans or restrictions are not new in Canadian schools. Debbie Clarke, a spokeswoman with the Simcoe County District School Board, which oversees the Barrie, Ont., school says it’s up to principals to make the final call on how they want to mark Halloween.

●ポイント３：TOEICの「board」は「板」じゃない！●
サブタイトルの「board」という単語は、TOEICではmustで覚えておかなければいけない頻出単語です。一見とても簡単な単語に見えますが、この「school board」という単語になると意味が全く取れないという状況になりがちです。実はこの使い方の時、この単語の意味は「board（委員会、理事会）」という意味になります。簡単に言うと「えらい人達、偉い人達の集まり」という意味ですね。
「school board」を直訳すると「学校委員会」となりますが、もう少し日本語らしい表現にすると「school board = 教育委員会」になりますね。その他に、この単語を使ったTOEIC頻出表現は「board member = （会社などの）重役、取締会のメンバー」があります。
最後に、この単語のもう１つのTOEIC頻出表現も押さえておいて下さい。この単語がホテルや宿泊施設などで使われる時には「board = 食事」という意味になります。
例えば、留学生活にはおなじみのホームステイ。一般的には宿泊＋食事というのが基本ですが、条件に「full board / half board」という項目がある場合は、食事がだされる回数が変わってくるということになります。「full board」なら3食、「half board」なら一日２食が基本になりますね。
このように、中学生で習う簡単な単語でも、TOEICになると受験ではまったく見た事も聞いた事もないような単語の意味で使われることがありますのでしっかり押さえておきましょう！
●ポイント４：形容詞「outraged＝angry」●
本文一文目にでてくる「outraged」という単語ですね。ちょっと難し単語ですが、ESLバージョンの簡単な単語になおすと、「outraged = angry」になります。この単語のポイントは、この単語には「outraged」と「outrageous」という２つの似たかたちの形容詞が存在する事です。どちらも似た単語なのでどちらもで意味が変わらないのでは！？と思ったら大間違いです。この２つの単語の違いは、「bored」と「boring」の違いと同じものになります。
I am bored. 私は退屈している。
I am boring.私はつまらない。（人をつまらなくさせるさせる存在）
日本人がよくやってしまう英語の間違いで上の用な文章がありますね。友達と一緒にいて、「つまらないね〜」ということを言いたい時に、誤って「I am boring」という「自分はつまらない、ひとをたいくつにさせてしまう存在です」といった英語表現を作ってしまう人がいますが、正しくは自分がつまらないという表現は「I am bored」ですね。これと同じ使い方をする形容詞は、「interested/interesting, excited/exciting/, tired/tiring」などがありますが、この「outraged」もそれらの単語と同じ使い方をします。ただし、「outraging」という単語はないので、かわりに「outrageous」という単語が使われます。
自分が怒っているときは、「I am outraged.」となり、主語や修飾する単語がものの場合は「His idea is outrageous」といった感じでこの単語を使うのです。
ちょっと難しい単語ですが、意味と使い方をしっかり押さえておきましょう！
