今年第1回目の東京英字新聞購読セミナーでは、Facebookの代表ザッカーバーグの方針変更発表を取り上げました。
「ニュースフィードのデザイン変更の一環として友人・家族の投稿を優先的にしメディアや企業のコンテンツを減らす。この変更によりユーザーがフェイスブックに費やす時間が一時的に低下するかもしれないが長期的にはユーザーの満足度が高まり、フェイスブックの魅力が増すと考えている。」というものです。
彼の言葉: ”By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down”の中の”measures” “engagement”は、一般的な意味の“対策”“婚約”と解釈すると意味が取れないのですが、ザッカーバーグ氏の発言の前後関係から言葉のニュアンスを理解する練習の場になりました。
Ｉ conducted my first seminar of 2018 in Tokyo. I covered the recent article on big changes to Facebook’s news feed. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, announced that Facebook would be changing how much sponsored content it presents to users. Instead, they will show more content from friends and family. I helped attendees grasp Mark’s message, “By making these changes, he expects the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down. Although “ engagement” typically refers to a formal contract of marriage , in his message “engagement” refers to onsite-activity. Overall, Zuckerberg expects the amount of the time users spend on Facebook will decrease, but the time they do spend on it will be more meaningful. He believes this change will benefit the online community, and in the future will also benefit his company.
